Jaspal Bhatti
aspal Singh Bhatti, the quintessential entertainer and television personality, known for his unique style of projecting the problems of the common man, has been awarded the Padma Bhushan, posthumously.
After receiving the honour, an inconsolable Mrs Savita Bhatti, the late satirist-turned-actor's spouse said: "Being the country's coveted award, I express my deep gratitude for recognising my late husband's work and awarding him when he is not around. The gesture has definitely infused fresh energy into the entire family, which is engaged in carrying forward his unfinished projects. Ironically, it feels somewhat disheartening to note that the government did not acknowledge his work when he was alive. But, I think it is always better late than never. We are really humbled by the gesture."
An electrical engineer by profession, Bhatti, emerged as one of the most popular contemporary faces of rip-roaring comedy. He carved a niche for himself with smash hits like Ulta-Pulta on Doordarshan, followed by Flop Show and a host of movies, plays and public shows on TV, which spoke of the malpractices in the police force, administration and society, through satire.
Mrs. Bhatti quickly adds, "Bhattiji was a man of vision and had a whole lot of agenda on mind. He was a perfectionist to core, with his unique artistic interests, sincerity and, to cap it all, his dedication to a cause. He has proved it in ample measures, be it his role as engineer, playwright, actor, director, comedian, satirist, social activist, cartoonist, all rolling into one. And he excelled in each."
Bhatti always promoted and employed humour as his powerful vehicle to put accross the point. He wrote, directed and starred in several films, a majority of which were based on social themes.
