here is no denying the fact that theatre has taken the centre stage in terms of powerful mediums of entertainment today. Theatre for Theatre (TFT), which came into existence in 1988 first conceptualized and initiated a theatre festival in Chandigarh in 2004. This year Chandigarh witnessed memorable performances by celebrated theatre personnel from Chandigarh, Ujjain (MP), New Delhi, Rajasthan, Jammu (J&K) and Mohali (Punjab).
The 8th edition of 'TFT Winter National Theatre Festival' was organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, GOI and the Department of Cultural Affairs, Chandigarh. The week-long festival showcased a number theme plays that included Arre Sharif Log, 8 GhanteYum LeelaDo Kauri Ka KhelPaanch Naad Da PaniKhol Do. The festival turned out to be a welcome breather for the local audience.
This edition of the festival was marked by the 400th production of the play Court Martial, written by veteran playwright Swadesh Deepak. The play holds a greater significance for the group by creating history of sorts in the realm of theatre across the country. The play has held 225 shows at the Punjab Art Council, Chandigarh, in a row.
Parvesh Sethi, Chandigarh's grand old man of theatre, who has actively participated and associated in the play from its 1st show to the historic 400th, says, "It is a moment of pride for me to be a part of the show.  'Court Martial' has received a huge round of applause from across the country. Each and every dialogue, apart from the script and direction make this play really unforgettable."
Emphasizing on the significance of the play, Sethi further adds, "The year 1999 is described as the death of theatre in India. It was sheer dedication and efforts of the like-minded artists that it was revived. We dedicated ourselves to the revival of theatre and did more than 275 shows of Court Martial in the year 2000."
The TFT, which has produced more than 30 plays covering a wider spectrum of themes including Inna Ki AwazSukke-PattenWeek-EndEk mamuli Aadmi, Tamas, Aazadi Ke ParwaneShaheed Ki Wapasi, have a powerful cast of amateur and professional artistes dedicated towards the promotion of theatre.
Sudesh Sharma, Founder & Director, TFT says, "The guiding theme of organizing the festival is to gear up the theatre activity in the city. Every year, during this seven-day-long festival, veteran directors, actors, and other artistes from seven states are invited to perform at the festival, which has been a great morale-boosting exercise for us".
