he city is all set to witness one of its biggest sports events – the Chandigarh Cyclothon. The third edition of the event will be held on February 3, 2013. Being organised under the aegis of the Chandigarh Tourism, in association with Hero Cycles India, the Cyclothon is expected to draw a significant response from cycling enthusiasts spread across the region. Like all the previous events, the organisers are expectant of a yet another successful event as over 5000 cycling enthusiasts are expected to take part in the event ranging from children to adults in different cycling rides including Elite Cyclothon with National and International level cyclists.
While addressing the media, D K Tiwari, Secretary Tourism, Chandigarh, said, "Chandigarh provides a perfect setting for this sporting event. With sprawling green belts, flora and fauna, it is a nature lovers' paradise and the sport of cycling goes well with this image. The event will project the city's potential as a tourist destination as the races will meander along major tourist landmarks like Sukhna Lake and Rock Garden."
The highlight of the Cycling event will be a Special National Elite race. This competitive race will feature as many as 100 professional cyclists locked in a battle to clinch top honours. The race would be of a gruelling 60 kilometres and the total prize money to be won in this event is Rs 3 lakhs which will be shared amongst top cyclists.
Athletes from as many as 20 states will take part in the event. There will be various non competitive events too. Mass events would feature Junior/Fun Ride which will be a 5 Kms race; Amateur Ride, a 10 Kms race; and Corporate Ride which will be a 10 Kms race.
Chandigarh is a cycle friendly city with special cycle tracks made along with the roads covering almost all sectors. Bicycles being the most environment friendly and economical mode of transport, the Administration have been majorly promoting and encouraging people of all ages to use it as a mode of transport.
