or 25-year-old Nav Nirman, determination and perseverance are not mere words or concepts. The young director from Chandigarh has secured a top slot at the 2nd Documentary and Short film Festival, Kolkata, with his maiden short film The Eternal Lover.
The Eternal Lover is a 14-minute movie that entails a love triangle, with its trials and tribulations, narrated from a Gen-next perspective, adhering to and departing from its truisms. The non-linear narrative captures the trivialities upon which modern relationships are made and destroyed.
Speaking about the movie, Nirman recollects, "It was sheer coincidence when I bumped into film director Anurag Kashyap during his visit to Chandigarh and expressed my keen desire to work with him. 'Make a small film first, then I'll think about it', was his response. I took it as a challenge and started working on the script. It took me three days to write the script, followed by the movie shoots that we finished in almost the same number of days. The film has been received well so far and now my only aim is to show it to Mr Kashyap."
Nirman has acted in No One Killed Jessica. However, his innings in acting started with Punjabi soap operas like Pinjra and Dooriyan which offered him a platform to learn the nuances of acting and direction at the early age of 12. Ironically though, the serials were never screened. He was inclined towards direction after watching Kashyap's No Smoking and religiously started following world cinema from then on.
"I see on average 6-7 movies a day regardless of the language. I see Spanish, German, French, Japanese and even Iranian movies to learn various direction techniques. I have written the script for a Punjabi film with an ace comedian and have also written scripts for two more short films. I plan to start working on them soon," says the young director.
