"I am never scared of anyone because I am a comedian first, which is my forte, and then a politician," says the quintessential entertainer Bhagwant Mann, who launched his comic CD, Kulfi Garma Garam 2 after a sabbatical of four years.
Mann has bounced back with double vigor and in this album he has spared no one, be it politicians, government departments, including Police or Sports, other singers, fellow entertainers and even businessmen.
"When I released my cassette in 1993, I was told, 'He speaks against Police and Politicians, he'll be shot soon, for sure!' but the quality of creating satire on existent subjects proved a blessing in disguise for me as people made me Bhagwant Mann from Bhagwant."
After Sardar Jaspal Singh Bhatti's demise, Mann is the only comedian who jests against all forms of authority, and with his wit and satires he brings to light the harsh realities that exist in the society and in chorus spreads messages that hit hard on the minds of the general public.
"Comedy is an element that adds grace to a movie, it is like Ginger that tastes good if used sensibly in any dish but if you'll make a dish of ginger only, nobody would like it!" he says typically.
The ace comedian is working for his upcoming movie Moga to Melbourne Via Chandigarh and will keep appearing at regular intervals for the love of his fans.

Visitors bring a message of peace from near and far

Visitors bring a message of peace from near and far
MUNISH DHIMAN  5th Oct 2013
Bernie Meyer in Chandigarh. Popularly known as American Gandhi, Meyer will be travelling to several places in India to spread Gandhi’s message of peace
ernie Meyer, better known as the American Gandhi, recently visited Chandigarh for the 8th International Youth Peace Fest. "In 2002, a peace group approached me to portray Gandhi. I had been studying Gandhi for a long time but since that incident, thoughts of Gandhi became inseparable. I have been portraying Gandhi since then and this is my 15th visit to India and the 5th to Chandigarh. People respect Gandhi and they honour me in his name," he toldGuardian20.
Meyer believes studying Gandhi and implementing Gandhi's vision in life are two different things. "When Gandhi existed, non-violence had a different meaning. Today, when I talk about non-violence, it's in the context of nuclear weapons and atomic bombs at their peak. Gandhi's messages are important. Though not always easy to follow though, they are meant to make you strong and happy," Meyer said. Dressed like the Mahatma, Meyer bears a striking resemblance to Gandhi. Meyer too has been jailed several times, most recently in Scotland in May this year while protesting against nuclear weapons at the Trident Submarine Base. Meyer adds, "I believe in Gandhi and that's why portraying him became easy. He believed in change, learning new things and always did what he believed to be true."
He believes in Gandhi's emphasis on taking care of the environment and leading a simple life. Meyer rues, "Industrial society is destroying the air and water. I request people to lead a simple lifestyle so that resources are not exhausted." To spread the message of peace across the nation, Meyer will visit Indore, Aurangabad, Bhopal, Mumbai, Udaipur, Jaipur amongst other places.
From lahore, with love
Members of the delegation from Pakistan
A five-member delegation from Lahore, Pakistan, also visited the peace fest. The representatives included Tanzila Khan, Farhat Raza Khan, Aliya Harir, Mitharam Parmar and Kiran Samuel. Tanzila Khan is an activist and motivational speaker. This is her third visit to India with her mother, Farhat Raza Khan. "Coming to India is always a great experience. One of the reasons for coming is to encourage greater amity between the two countries. This is a great platform for the exchange of ideas for productive activities and to interact with people beyond the boundaries of pre-conceived notions, prejudices and hatred," she said. She grew up watching Bollywood flicks and was always fascinated with Indian cinema. Aliya Harir, another participant from Lahore, says, "Such fests are a perfect podium to build better relationships between the two countries. The sort of love, warmth, care and affection that we get here doesn't make us feel like we are in a foreign country."
Explaining the endeavour Pramod Sharma, Coordinator, Yuvsatta, said, "Next year, we will hold this annual event from 27 September to 2 October and we will try to increase the international participation."

Anil Kapoor at the promotion of 24
e saw Anil Kapoor hosting a reality show in Academy Award winning film Slumdog Millionaire, but his role in the eighth season of the action series 24 and also in Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol, became the reason behind his international appeal.
Now, Kapoor is all set to take on the small screen with the Indian adaptation of 24 on Colors. He believes that the shows being aired on the Indian television have become mundane and repetitive. "Not just the audience but the channels too are looking for something different. I had received various offers for reality shows earlier but kept refusing them. 24 will indeed be a challenge, but I've analyzed the series very closely and have found that the script is remarkable and the outcome will definitely be overwhelming."
Kapoor plays the role of Jai Singh Rathod, head of the Anti-Terrorist Unit, in the show. He has bought the rights the complete suspense-thriller, that had became the longest running television drama ever on the American Television, and believes that the Indian adaption will do well too. "Casting the stars for different roles wasn't really a challenge as the series is quite popular and everyone wanted to be a part of it. However, the most demanding task was working on the character of Jai Singh Rathod. I wanted to recreate what Sean Connery is to James Bond, Jack Bauer is to 24 and I'll be more than happy if I can achieve even 60 per cent of it."
Besides Kapoor, the cast includes Anupam Kher, Shabana Azmi, Rahul Khanna, Tisca Chopra and Mandira Bedi. The show has been directed by Abhinay Deo and the story for the Indian adaptation is by Rensil D'Silva.

Correct your Punjabi on Facebook with Gurakhar

Correct your Punjabi on Facebook with Gurakhar
MUNISH DHIMAN  28th Sep 2013
Shahbaz Singh
ne frequently encounters the Punjabi script on digital platforms, be it status messages on social networking platforms like Facebook or in messaging apps like Whatsapp. Despite its popularity, making sure you are accurate had remained a hitch till now, given the dearth of spell-check softwares. After more than two years of hard work and dedication, a 16-year old student, Shahbaz Singh, has come to the rescue and has developed a software called 'Gurakhar' that spell checks for more than 1 lakh words accurately and efficiently.
Hailing from Moga, Punjab, and son of the leading playwright, Pali Bhupinder Singh, Shahbaz has been fascinated with technology, the internet and computers from a young age. A self-taught web designer, Shahbaz started designing websites at the age of 11 with the help of online tutorials. "I have been developing websites for more than four years now. While working on various projects, I realized that there is no spell-check software available for my mother tongue— Punjabi, and that's when I conceptualized Gurakhar. Creating a huge database of words was a challenge, though," he told Guardian20.
Shahbaz, a class-10 student of D.M. Sr. Sec School, has developed, designed and programmed this online software under the guidance of scholars of Punjabi language and literature, without any external support either from the government or any institute. Those who guided him included Dr. Jalaur Singh, Dr. Uma Sethi, Prof. Jagdeep Singh, Dr. Joga Singh and Prof. Rajinder Singh. "Gurakhar checks misspelled words in Punjabi text (in various fonts) and then suggests the correct spellings. Added information about the selection and usage of proper words is available in the software's advanced mode," he added, commenting on the working of the software. The software has been checked comprehensively for 100 per cent accuracy, with the last checks being done by Punjabi University, Patiala. Shahbaz is keen on pursuing a career in IT, and also wants to learn the latest technologies like VFX, editing etc, to help his father in filmmaking later. To know more about the software, log on to gurakhar.org.

Polly’s diary inspires daughter to make music

Polly’s diary inspires daughter to make music

n the high-tech world where there is no shortage of websites where songs can be downloaded for free, coming up with an independent album is commendable. Despite the challenges, Chandigarh based mother-daughter duo have come up with their debut album 'Polly's Diary' and are hoping for a good response.
The name 'Polly's Diary' is catchy and the story behind it is out of the ordinary. Singer and composer Jasleen Aulakh tells Guardian20, "Polly is my mother's name and all the songs in this album, except Chidiya, are from her secret diary that I discovered a couple of years back".
As a child, Polly Saghera, who retired as an English lecturer from Government College for Girls, yearned to be a radio singer. Though her dreams never took shape, she remained close to music and expressed her feelings and various experiences in the form of couplets and poems in a secret diary. She had kept the diary concealed for more than a decade until it was discovered by her daughter.
Polly adds, "When Jasleen found the diary she liked the prose and told me with sheer confidence that these can be used as lyrics. I am happy with the way she has complied this beautiful album. She worked over them religiously and today, Polly's (secret) Diary is out for music lovers."
The album comprises eight songs in English, Hindi and Punjabi language where Dreamer, Tujh Se Door and Chidiya are being introduced whereas rest of the songs including Supna, Paisa Paisa, Jo Beet Gayi So Baat Gayi, Soye Nahi and Shadow have been released online.
Jasleen is not at all scared of piracy as she knows there is no way to curb it. However, during a show at Nagpur around 15 albums were sold, "It's strange that people spend more than 1000 rupees willingly on alcohol but they are not ready to spend even Rs150 for original music."
Jasleen has been performing in various parts of the country with her band, Just Ittefaq and her multilingual album is being marketed under the same banner that comprises other members of the band Gaurish Sood and Rohit Joshi.

Sonam Kapoor at the store launch
"I will do what I like and what interests me, and I will do no favours to anyone if I don't like it," said Bollywood's fashion diva Sonam Kapoor at the launch of Tommy Hilfiger's store, showcasing the Fall Holiday collection '13 at Elante mall in Chandigarh.
Sonam last visited Chandigarh for the promotion of Bhag Milkha Bhag but this was defiantly a very different platform. Dressedin a classy checked TH sweater and short skirt, Sonam spoke about the brand she wore so elegantly and which reminded her of her college days and the comfort that goes with that nostalgic memory.
"I would like you to do your homework well and brush up your knowledge," said annoyed Sonam on being asked about stepping down from the L'Oreal campaign. The actress modified her statement later and asked the media to get in touch with her secretary when she was shown a UK based website that mentioned her exclusion from the campaign.
Kapoor also refused to make any comments on the rumour that Tommy Hilfiger was escorted off the Oprah Winfrey Show after having making racial remarks. She stated, "I will be more than happy to answer to anything else except controversies."
About the launch Sonam said, "As a fashion enthusiast, I'm glad that Chandigarh has a new international shopping destination in the recently opened Tommy Hilfiger anchor store. Tommy has been known for its blend of hybrid of heritage and modernity. I really like the brand and am going to take back home a couple of their dresses with me this evening."
Sonam also expressed her excitement about her father Anil's debut on the small screen with 24, the Indian adaptation of hit international TV series of the same name, though she herself has no plans to join him in the next season. She said, "I am not sure whether I'll be doing it or not but yes, I will definitely not do it just to favour my father."
