"Capture a moment and preserve it forever — probably that's the meaning of photograph for most," said documentary photographer Ajay Bhatia tells while talking about his ongoing exhibition at Alliance Française, Chandigarh, titled Straight Lines, Open Spaces, The legacy of Le Corbusier.
"I have witnessed how Chandigarh has developed in the last decade. But I am glad that it has retained its rich legacy, charm and beauty marked by its architecture and serenity. Based on an European ethos, the rigid grid system of the city does not allow for many curves and turns. This exhibition is my tribute to the legendry craftsman and architect who has crafted this city," added Bhatia.
After spending more than a year clicking thousands of photographs of the most famous places and landmarks of the city, Bhatia has managed to put 30 images on display. All the photographs are 24x18 in size and all of them have been placed in a single stretch to maintain the essence of the exhibition.
For any photographer it is essential to express and narrate a story. Bhatia further said, "I Try to capture everything on the camera and try to avoid processing to the bare minimum. I try to make the best use of natural light and click whatever I see through the viewfinder. The viewfinder for meeasily isolates details and notice objects which generally go unnoticed."
Straight Lines refer to the places including Capitol Complex, Sector-17, and Secretariat which are the busy and bustling centres of the city, whereas the Open Spaces denote the lake, Leisure Valley and other such places.
"The title of the exhibition is absolutely apt. This exhibition is for people who conceived Chandigarh, who planned and built Chandigarh and for those who preserved the essence of this beautiful City," concludes Bhatia.
The exhibition is on till November 9, 2013.
